FAQs

Who goes on RAW retreats?
RAW retreats are for women, 16 years and older, who desire to challenge themselves to grow physically, emotionally and spiritually.  Real Active Women are women who are raising children, fostering relationships, working hard on their careers, spending more time giving than receiving, and needing a place of solace to recharge.  They are women who find rest through moving their bodies, adventure and connecting with others.

How  much cycling/cross country skiing will I be doing?
We have route options ranging from 15-65 miles a day on the bike, and 1-3 hours skiing.  On most cycling trips, we will ride two of the three days, averaging 30-45 miles/day.  On cross country ski trips, the time and level of challenge is entirely up to you!  Ski until your muscles are completely fatigued, or relax a the lodge and take a cooking class or soak in the hot tub.  Custom trips can be arranged for higher or lower  mileage.

Do I need to train?
No.  The goal of a RAW retreat is to challenge yourself based on where you are currently at.  If you desire to challenge yourself prior to your retreat so that you can do more miles, wonderful.  If you are already cycling/skiing consistently and are worried that you won’t be challenged, don’t.  We’ve got something for you.

Do you rent bicycles/skis?
No.  We expect each guest to bring their own bicycle/skis.  If you do not currently have a bike/skis, you can rent one from one of our partner bike shops, or REI.  Contact us at least one month prior to your retreat for assistance with bicycle rentals.

What type of bike/skis should I bring/rent?
We will be cycling hilly terrain so a road or light(er)weight hybrid bike is ideal.  Mountain bikes are not advised.  For winter trips, bring classic or skate skis.  Most guests will be using classic skis.

How do I get to the retreat center?
Carpooling from Seattle is encouraged and will be arranged among guests after signing up for the retreat.  If you are flying in from out of state, a shuttle can be arranged from your SeaTac hotel of choice for an additional $75.  The Bayview Retreat center may be reached via the Fauntleroy ferry in West Seattle, or the Tahlequah ferry in N. Tacoma.  Our Leavenworth lodge is a short 10 minute drive from town center.  A shuttle can be arranged if you choose to take the train (an excellent option!).
